Exactly one month after the commencement of the pile foundation construction for the Yichang Yangtze River Rail-Road Bridge, the Sunward Intelligent SWDM600 rotary drilling rig, as the main construction equipment for the project, has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities. It has laid a solid foundation for this "world-class project," earning high praise from the construction team.

As a critical crossing channel shared by the Huyu-Rong High-Speed Railway and the Hunan High-Speed Railway, the Yichang Yangtze River Rail-Road Bridge spans 2.782 kilometers, with a main span of 800 meters. It adopts a composite design of "four railway tracks + six urban road lanes + two rail transit lines," setting a global record as the first three-purpose steel truss cable-stayed bridge with the largest span, featuring railways on the upper level and roads and rail transit below.


This project is a vital component in building the Yangtze River Economic Belt's comprehensive three-dimensional transportation corridor. Its completion will significantly improve China's railway network layout, establish Yichang as a transportation hub, accelerate Hubei Province's "One Core, Two Subsidiaries" development strategy, promote regional coordinated development, and enhance Yichang's river-crossing road network and urban growth.


The construction is undertaken by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., with the pile foundation construction for the No. 7 and No. 8 main piers carried out by the company’s mechanized construction division. These piers are the key control projects for the entire bridge and the Yifu Railway. The main piers are designed with a pile diameter of 3 meters, totaling 40 and 42 piles respectively, and depths ranging from over 30 meters to more than 60 meters. The geology consists of red sandstone, pebble layers, and limestone, with the hardest sections exhibiting uniaxial compressive strength exceeding 60 MPa.


Additionally, due to the project's location in an ecologically sensitive area, pile foundation construction must minimize vibration and noise impacts on surrounding flora and fauna. To ensure the project meets requirements, the construction team purchased two SWDM600 rotary drilling rigs, the largest in the project, as the primary construction equipment.

Moreover, its industry-first large-inertia rotary platform braking enhancement technology resolves issues of platform instability and low hole accuracy caused by transient impact loads, effortlessly meeting the demands of the bridge’s ultra-deep and oversized pile foundation construction.
